Razor CEO: Our hoverboard won’t explode

Beyond the obvious draw of this fireworks show beneath their feet, the Jetson Pixel offers kids a top cruising speed of 9 miles per hour and a range of 5 miles. The board is recommended for kids 12 and up and will hold up to 220 pounds. It can travel 4.3 miles and features a top speed of 7.5 miles per hour.

However, we wouldn’t recommend pushing this board to the max as if felt pretty unstable at that speed. The recalled helmets do not comply with the coverage, positional stability, and labeling requirements of the CPSC federal safety regulation for bicycle helmets. The helmets can fail to protect in the event of a crash, posing a risk of head injury. The Hovertrax 1.5 delivers a one-of-a-kind self-balancing experience that makes learning to ride smooth and simple.

It’s always a good thing to be aware of how much runtime you have left, especially when you have a group of kids waiting for their turn. Razor’s Hovertrax 2.0 is still one of the nicest looking hoverboards around hands down. It has a polished feel, elegant curves and also looks/feels much nicer than previous models.

The Hovertrax’s lackluster performance continued in our outdoor capabilities tests. Our board broke during this phase of the analysis, and the company issued a replacement (we gave them points of that in the support metric). In this metric we test how these boards handle rough razor electric scooter roads and off-pavement terrain. The Razor broke when passing over a crack in the street, thus proving that it does not fare well off flat, smooth surfaces. The Hovertrax 2.0 is manufactured by the well known Razor company which has been making scooters for nearly two decades.

As such we test them for their run time, travel radius, and recharge time. This test is run on smooth, flat pavement, i.e., ideal surface conditions for a hoverboard. Making matters worse, the Hovertrax only lasted for 69 minutes in our obstacle course run time test.

Kids up to the 132-pound weight capacity should enjoy the advanced features. For heavier or older kids, there is another more expensive Segway model, which accommodates weights up to 200 pounds. More generally, however, hoverboards for any age fall into the same category as other vehicles like bikes, scooters and electric play cars—a helmet and protective pads are recommended. After all, hoverboard batteries catching fire was a big news story some years ago.

Unfortunately, our testers found this board to be overly sensitive and unpredictable. The wiring harness that manages the charging of the lithium-ion battery was not properly assembled, creating a risk of overheating and fire while charging. Federal law prohibits any person from selling products subject to a Commission ordered recall or a voluntary recall undertaken in consultation with the CPSC. The strap anchor can become dislodged from the helmet when sufficient force is applied, and therefore violates the CPSC federal safety regulation for bicycle helmets.

Adults and kids alike who want a bit of flair in their ride should consider the Gyroor G11. The hoverboard is stable and durable, with the added bonus of a dazzling light display that practically covers it from top to bottom. The hoverboard’s dedicated app allows you to control colors, set speed razor hoverboards controls, and stream your favorite music via Bluetooth while you roll along, and most customers say it’s easy to navigate. I tried out the IO Hawk hoverboard a year ago and it was very tricky. They’re not easy to learn, and I saw one guy fall flat on his back because he couldn’t balance.
