There are also different shapes to choose from. Although this is a relatively small park, there are so many more trails and spots to explore. After spending several days here, I can easily say this is my favorite stretch of the Pacific Coast that I’ve seen. Mostly because there were dunes and the path was a beach walk… I’ll tell you though, walking in soft sand will give your legs a workout. While Secret Beach may not be a secret anymore, it doesn’t make it not worth visiting! You’ll want to park at the Thunder Cove Beach parking area. There are three “branches” off the main trail; I suggest walking to the last one. Not just a view of the beach, the actual beach. The trail is downhill toward the Natural bridges, and if you don’t have a sound footing while coming down, there IS a chance of continuing off the cliff.
At China Beach I cleared a safe-looking tent site behind a windbreak boulder. This mostly involved removing the blackened rocks and buried charcoal of earlier picnic fires. In Oregon, beach fires are not allowed in driftwood piles or against logs. Backpackers generally rely on low-impact stoves, without building fires at all. We hiked on to the next cove, 2 miles south, where ours were the only footprints. If you follow the right path down to Natural Bridges, it takes about 20 minutes (it’s a strenuous hike).
Without official beach camping areas, the 12-mile Boardman Corridor isn’t very friendly to backpackers. Most people will go left, get to the viewing platform, and either turn around or continue on the trail. Continuing on the path means you’re going away from the bridges and you’re hiking along the Coastal Trail. Head to the right of the parking lot and make sure you have good shoes on, no kids with you, and a strong sense of adventure.
