It is unlike the thin synthetic fabric you get on backpacking tents; this is much thicker. A fantastic vent at the top on the front opens and closes almost like a drawbridge, with a pulley handle on the outside to open it and one on the inside to close it. Even with this, we feel that a cotton canvas is still more breathable.
It’s the perfect choice for three-season multipurpose camping. Constructed using a ripstop polyester canvas, be ready for family camping or hunting trips, disaster relief, and everything in between. The durable steel frame has extra guy line support to withstand wind and snow. Ease of setup (how easy it is to pitch and take down a tent) is pretty much always a high mark for Ozark Trail tents. These tents are built for first-time and/or fairweather campers, so Ozark Trail puts a lot of effort into making them easy to use. Shape wise most Ozark Trail tents either come in a cabin or dome shape.
It is perfect for tents as they are hard to damage and can be repaired quickly, which means they last a very long time. I wouldn’t say cotton is any more durable than other types of canvas, but it will compete head-to-head with modern fabrics regarding toughness. The boxy shape of the Copper Canyon is not great in high winds, and the tent’s stakes are the opposite of heavy-duty. We surmised, perhaps accurately, that only the weight of our bodies inside the tent prevented it from ripping out of the ground and blowing away with the biggest gusts of one Pacific Coast windstorm. As stated above, durability and materials are the main pain point of Ozark Trail tents.
Rather than continuing to wait for the company to come up with a soulution and stop questioning me on proper use or abusive weather conditions! I decided that for the $40 I spent on it, (knowing that you get what you pay for) I would sew the gap and seal it really well and get a thicker gage replacement pole for the fly. I’m going to Coleman for now on because you are incapable of making a zipper that doesn’t break so damn easy on the door. Wall tents offer much more headroom than a dome tent because the vertical side walls mean you can get much taller structures. In addition, the center line, where the pitched roof is at its highest provides more than enough movement to stand up and walk around. It blocks out the sunlight so you can sleep in, keeps cool in the heat, stays warmer inside the tent in winter, and is waterproof and wind resistant.
The main thing is is that the zippers that you put in these tents are so substandard that it doesn’t last more than one or two camping trips. You set a new low in tents and the damn zippers you put in them. And before you guys cop an attitude, I have been camping since I was at least 4 years old and I am now in ozark trail canopy my mid-50s. You can leave a wall tent made from canvas up all year if you are willing to accept it will have a reduced life span and be willing to maintain it as and when needed. Wall tents may be the most practical tent style in some regards and not so much in others. What we mean by this is the shape, size, and design of a wall tent are extremely practical for dozens of reasons, but the fact that they are so heavy and bulky to carry means they are not the most practical for wild camping. They are practical shelters in almost every way but not so practical to transport on foot. Because they work well as a basecamp tents, they make excellent hunting shelters. You set them up once and then head off each day to hunt, knowing you always have somewhere warm and dry to return to. In addition, if you hunt with a buddy or two, wall tents provide more than enough space for everyone to spread out and store all their gear.
We talked through the Copper Canyon’s specs with Ryan Flynn, sales manager for Johnson Outdoors, Eureka’s parent company. Flynn told us that the advantage of the lighter aluminum poles found in the company’s Jade Canyon tent is purely about weight. The Copper Canyon’s rugged fiberglass-and-steel poles are preferable for what he called “free-country” camping (car camping on Bureau of Land Management land, for instance) and for anyplace else where weight wouldn’t be an issue. Our only quibble with the Mineral King 3 is that it comes with a mere six stakes. That’s just enough to secure the tent and fly but not to fully secure the tent with extra lines in very windy conditions. You can find a plethora of options out there, but these inexpensive stakes are comparable to the ones that accompany the Mineral King 3.
“A nylon tent is much stretchier,” he said, “and can absorb a lot more shock,” which can be an advantage in the backcountry, where your only option in a windstorm is to ride it out inside your tent. Yes, it can feel more humid, but if you can get some kind of a breeze blowing through, you can regulate the temperature without any AC. Don’t think it won’t be hot, though; all tents get hot in the sun, but the cotton canvas is just better than synthetic materials, in our opinion. On a recent trip, we tested a friend’s 16 x 20 ft Alpha wall tent, and it slept eight people with a stove, loads of gear, and two dogs. The tent will easily sleep 14 or more people on camping cots without a stove and maybe around 12 people with a stove.
