Braun’s Series 9 clean-and-charge base uses the same cartridges as the Series 7 base (and those of all other Braun shavers) and is functionally identical. Replacement cartridges last about three months and cost about $25 for a four-pack. Replacement foils are considerably more expensive for the Series 9; they currently run about $50, compared with about $30 to $40 for the Series 7.
A dirty razor can result in uneven shaving, as well as cause ingrown hairs or acne. The good news is some razors come with cleaning stations to help you remember. Battery life is solid – I get several weeks worth of shaves out of every charge. A cheaper option is Braun’s amazing new Series 7 70-N7200cc which comes equipped with a flexible head that shaves as close as a razor. The shaver includes an indicator to let you know when the time comes, and the cutters are usually in the $50 to $60 range.
My first bit of advice is to look at what the best shaver deals today happen to be. Their prices go up and down like rollercoasters, and you will frequently find that the most high-end razors somehow cost less than the more bog-standard ones. For instance, normally I would say the Series 9000 Prestige – the absolute crème de la crème of male shaving – is overpriced. But in today’s deals, it might suddenly be the same price as a Braun Series 9, or even less.
Braun electric razors range in price, with many between $180-$300. If you follow all these steps you should be in good hands for getting a quality shave every time. Just make sure to take care of your razor and give it proper maintenance. And if you’re just starting out using an electric razor, give yourself a grace period for your skin to adjust (we touch on the reasoning for this more down below).
Particularly when it comes to Phillips shavers and, to a slightly lesser extent Braun, there are usually at least three versions of each shaver. For anyone who only shaves once or twice a week, but wants to be smooth when they do, a manual razor is always better. Irregular shavers who don’t need to be baby smooth will be better off with the best beard trimmer and, if you’re looking to remove the hair from your body, you’ll want the best body groomers and even one of our best IPL machines. We tried Philips Norelco’s lower-end rotary models but determined that the brand’s 9000 series performed better, and it was so closely priced that it was a better buy for most people. In our experience, the 4000-series razor didn’t shave closely enough to be worth their bargain prices. However, one member of our test panel has been using a 4000-series model for years, and they still love it, even after trying much more expensive models.
Still, presumably some men must find this ability to turn the power down useful, or it wouldn’t be there. If you can’t find the 9300, get whichever 9000-series model is cheapest. In 2019, we tested the S9000 Prestige (pictured), which includes a digital battery meter—a nonessential upgrade—but unlike the 9300 doesn’t come with a cleaning system. Most of our testers agreed that the Series 9 is an amazing shaver. When Dan tried it on his three-day beard, he found that it worked better than any electric shaver he had ever used—though it paled in comparison to a standard blade when confronted with his iron curtain of a half-week’s whiskers. All Braun Series 7 models give consistently close, comfortable shaves.The 7071cc comes with the accessories we think most people want or need, including a cleaning system and carrying case.
