Aged Carlolinian mahogany and lemon flue-cured /virginias are narried with top-tier Orientals from Turkey and Greece. Columbus dubbed tobacco “the special herb” and we can’t help but agree. Once Europeans made their way to the “New World” their discovery of tobacco would go on to change the Old one.

If you’re unsure if it’s too high or too low, use a hygrometer to measure the humidity in your cellar. Another type of pipe, the water pipe, consists of a body filled with water, a bowl in which the tobacco is placed, and an attached tube and mouthpiece through which the pipe is smoked. Water pipes, or hookahs, originated in ancient Persia and India about 400 years ago and are still popular today. Hookahs are filled with fragrant tobaccos in a variety of flavors, such as cherry, apple, or mint.

It is also used as a component for many other blends where it serves a variety of purposes. It is a dark tobacco, similar to Burley that is cured in barns over an open fire. This gives it a smokiness, but one that is earthier, less woodsy, and more subtle than in Latakia. It has a relatively high nicotine content and burns well with good body.

He ascended to the British throne in 1901, serving as King Edward VII until 1910. Born in 1906, my father started smoking early in life, before commercially produced cigarettes were commonly available. All cigarettes then were “roll your own.” By the time World War II came around, he rolled cigarettes (at 3 cents each) for fellow soldiers. It is not necessarily true, though, that the best VA’s come from the United States, or from the state of Virginia. A “bright” VA is named as such because it’s taken from the top of the plant, where the highest quality leaf is. Just like any other leaf, there’s good and there’s not so good. So, it’s unwise to condemn all Burleys, as so many do, just because of a bad experience with inferior leaf.”

Many will begin with an Aromatic, or sweeter, blend at first and those that prefer earthier, spicier flavors will move onto English tobaccos. You don’t want to pack your tobacco too loosely or too tightly. The density and moisture Pipe Tobacco content in your tobacco will make a difference too. When the bowl is loaded and you’re ready to fire up, it’s best to use a soft flame lighter or matches. The flame is way too hot and you’ll incinerate your tobacco and your pipe.

A golden virginia, black cavendish, and burley leaf to lend this blend a smooth base, which is then topped with a modest amount of cherry flavor. Prince Albert blend is burley-based crimp cut long burning smoking tobacco. Latakia is an Oriental varietal of tobacco that hails from Cyprus and northern Syria.

Incidentally, VA’s with the most sugar will darken the most. The actual strain of tobacco can vary, although tobacco that isn’t native to the soils of Louisiana doesn’t yield a good product. Supposedly the most common strain used with Perique is something called “red burley”. Turkish varietals, unfortunately, are no longer available, even to professional blenders.
