I have some english blends that are 5 yrs old in pouches and they are fine. Not many high-grade, cellar-worthy tobaccos are sold in this form (in the USA, anyway) these days, but it’s an interesting question. There are a couple of different sorts of gaskets available, and I have noticed that some seem to possess more “rubber smell” than others. A couple of the jars I have have a Pipe Tobacco in Bags silicone gasket which has little detectable aroma to it, though I don’t know where these would be available individually. I have a half dozen of these, that have held various blends for more than 6 years, without ill effect. Honestly, I think before putting this blend in the press a pinch of stoved Virginia like Sutliff 507 would have bumped up the flavor and complexity a notch.

High heat, extremely dry conditions and UV from sunlight are definite no-nos. Mechanically Bag End burns contentedly slow, cool, and evenly supporting the blender’s assertion of a prolonged relaxing experience; that it was. Every last ember sears complete leaving a thick gray ash of its memory. The texture of smoke is decidedly creamy and flowing, manifesting neither harshness nor discomfort on the palate. A generous column of lacy smoke rolls outward producing a room note rendered by a warm inviting aroma of soured earthen spice, dark wood, and some sweet barn-like hay notes. The duration of this essence is marked considerably, yet its presence lacks unyielding forcefulness making Bag End’s fragrance pleasantly tolerable.

You can still taste it, but the rest of the smoke is so creamy-smooth that you wouldn’t want to drown it out. My tour didn’t stop at Bag End, but definitely took a different route after the visit. I will certainly be back to the Shire in the future. On the upper and rearmost perimeter of this moving triage of dense flavors the controlled woody, leathered smoky/charcoal annotated presence of Latakia provides the finishing relish.

In any event, use quality jars with good rubber seals. These seals do have a limited life expectancy, but that life is several, if not many years. I recently bought a couple of antique jars, and while I have no idea how old the rubber seals Pipe Tobacco in Cans were, they were quite brittle and useless as seals. I’ve kept some tobacco in modern jars for upwards of 7 years, with no sign of deterioration of the seals, so good quality rubber will last at least that long, if kept in a cool location.

Mount four Size 60 right to your humidor, so you can dive right into those cigars. The profile is slim enough to snug up into the lid or under a shelf or tray. Vacuum sealing, while quite popular, is simply a waste of time, and may actually be detrimental to the overall aging potential of the tobacco. Certainly the plastic materials that are used with home-vacuum sealers are NOT high-barrier films, and while they’ll keep most of the water in, they’ll let much of the goodness out. None other than Charles Rattray himself first wrote, in his “Disquisition for the Connoisseur” that vacuum sealing tins is NOT ideal. Prior to the more recently common flat tins, such great old brands as Balkan Sobranie, Rattray, McConnell, Drucquer & Sons, and many others were put in tins similar to what we use today.

The Service Corporation
commissioned a report to argue for the vital importance of the income earned from tobacco bag stringing by many
families in Virginia and North Carolina. The authors of the report solicited and published testimony from agents
who distributed the bags and from local government officials. The bulk of the report contains photographs and
descriptions of women and men who relied on tobacco bag stringing as a supplemental and, in some cases, a primary
source of income. The authors interviewed 147 families, primarily in and around Wilkes and Rockingham Counties,
North Carolina, and Richmond and South Richmond, Virginia. Evidence presented to the Court showed that the United States Marshal Service Fugitive Task Force located Galloway at a local hotel. When the agents arrested Galloway, they saw several plastic bags in plain view.
