The cleaning performance of the Dyson V10 is nearly flawless in all categories, capturing an average of 99% of debris during our tests across all three flooring types. Unlike the robot vacuums, even granulated sugar proved to be no match for the Dyson V10. The cleaning performance of the Roomba 690 is pretty impressive considering its lower than average price tag. When cleaning hardwood floors, the 690 captured nearly 98% of debris. When cleaning low pile carpet it was around 93% and high pile carpet was just slightly less at 91%.

The Heurist has been designed as a ‘learning’ robot which means that it does not take the simplest route, because it is constantly recalculating it’s distance from walls and irobot vacuum cleaner furniture. So rather than, say, following a wall for two metres, it will stop and start while it scans the wall every few seconds. This resulted in it taking 50 minutes to map and 35 minutes to clean our test room, a poor result compared to other robot vacuums.
Yet for as long as they’ve been around, robot vacuums have been a little gimmicky, with lots of us feeling unsure of whether they could do a thorough job of cleaning our homes. That said, the Roomba robot vac removed an average 71% of sand from our medium pile carpet while vacuuming. Again, this is the best result that we saw on this specific test. The robotic vacuum also cleaned up more dog hair, pet dander and allergens than any vacuum in this test group, and the bot navigates and maps multiple rooms and floors. IRobot has also updated its app to let you designate “keep-out zones” that you want the S9 Plus to avoid when cleaning.

This cordless stick vac also costs less than the Shark, a fact that’s hard to overlook. Keep in mind the company’s last robot vacuum, the 360 Heurist, never launched in the US, though it came to the UK. In Pocket-lint’s review of the automated cleaner, we said Dyson’s second-generation robot vacuum has a lot of superpower – whether on carpet, wood, or otherwise – that helps it stand out from the crowd. It is a tall robot vacuum, however, which makes it harder for it to get under furniture and clean hard-to-reach places.
