Weber Q 1200 Review Tested by GearLab

Not surprisingly, this grill doesn’t offer the control of full-size grills. This is not to say that it cannot be controlled, but that it will likely take a bit of a learning curve until you figure out how to do so. Temperature control tends to run away if this grill still has room to heat, i.e., it has yet to achieve its maximum temperature. Still, our testers were able to control the heat of this grill better than other models. As a portable gas grill that will likely appeal to novice cooks and experienced chefs alike, the accessibility of the Q 1200 is a major selling point. The battery-powered electronic ignition is the same you will find on a high-end, full-size grill.

So, in terms of cooking capacity, if you want to be able to cook more burgers at a time, opt for the Q2200. However, this extra cooking capacity obviously means that the Q2200 is the larger and heavier of the two. You also shouldn’t sleep on the new Weber Traveler which comes with a collapsible cart and more grilling space the even the Q2200.

All of these are heavy-duty, making the Q 1200 sturdy, durable, and likely to last a very long time. The Weber Q 1200 is a unique portable grill option, mainly in terms of design. A single, U-shaped burner puts out 8,500 BTU to efficiently heat the porcelain-enameled, cast-iron grill surface.

Choose from small, bare-bones models or full-sized models with all of the bells and whistles. The domed lid of the Q 1200 keeps the wind at bay — even high winds do not affect the flame, even on the lowest setting. Even though it is not necessarily insulated, the heavier-weight cast aluminum lid seems to be well-suited to retaining critical heat when outside temperatures drop. While Piezo igniters can also be finicky in cold weather, the electronic ignition system is entirely dependable . While reading reviews of the grill, I noticed that several people mentioned it can take a while to pre-heat, so I shut the lid and went inside to prep my burger. When I checked on the grill five minutes later, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the lid thermometer already read 400 degrees.

Even though these are smaller grills, Weber still made sure that there was some shelf space with two fold-out shelves on both grills. You can have a plate for burgers when they are done sitting on one shelf. You can have a stack of cheese slices on the other shelf too. While it is incredibly easy to use, porcelain-enameled cast iron is meant to be treated with a level of respect commensurate with its cooking performance. Unlike a regular grill surface, you never want to use a wire brush, which will destroy the naturally non-stick coating. Instead, for heavy cleanings opt for a soft bristle or nylon brush. The grill surface itself portable bbq also has a lot to do with the effectiveness of the Q 1200. Unlike so many other grills that are outfitted with a simple, stainless steel grate, the range of this barbecue is porcelain-enameled cast iron. While it is likely best known in its skillet form, this material is famous for heat retention and the resulting even distribution across the cook surface.
