And again, we’ve found over and over again that such bots work well in smaller spaces. We’ve tested a handful of its laser-nav bots over the past few years, including the Deebot Ozmo T8 AIVI (a higher-end but otherwise similar version of the N8 and N8 Pro). All of the Ecovacs models we’ve tested worked fine when they were new, but you can usually find a better bot for a lower price. Their major flaw lies in the Ecovacs app, which is glitchier than others. Many of those reviewers also noted difficulty getting replacement parts. We can’t be sure whether other models will have similar rates of problems, though the typical owner ratings for Ecovacs laser-nav bots tend to be a few tenths of a point lower than the ratings for other brands’ models.
These bots can use a handful of different technologies to make their maps. The laser rangefinder method has become the dominant tech and is excellent at quickly learning a home’s layout. But some great robots rely instead on a camera or gyroscopes , and they also get the job done—just a little slower, while bonking into more stuff, and with a slightly higher chance of missing areas. The Shark AI Robot VacMop is the only model on this list that doesn’t use a camera. That’s great, but it did not avoid any obstacles, nor did it even acknowledge in the app that it encountered any.
The Roomba 694, on the other hand, was easy for us to strip down and then reassemble with just a screwdriver. The Roborock app has tons of features and customizations, and it gives you more control over navigation than you can find on other robot vacs. It also provides a better user experience and works more reliably than its closest competitors’ apps. The dust- and crumb-pickup stress tests are meant only to give us an idea of each bot’s cleaning power—they don’t tell the whole story.
The Shark produced a pretty accurate floorplan of my two-bedroom apartment, and I was happy to see a “re-explore” option that I could use if the map wasn’t up to my standards. With a completed map, you’re then asked to label rooms in your home. That way, you can send the Shark to only the bedroom for more direct cleaning jobs, select “no-go” zones and more. In most homes, a bot is likely to stay in good shape if you do about 15 minutes of maintenance per month, maybe a bit more if the bot has a heavy workload. For all bots, be sure to leave a few feet open around and above the dock.
He enjoys visiting factories and learning about regulatory loopholes, and has flooded our testing area only three times. On that note, there is still a place in the world for cheaper robots that rely on semi-random navigation. (We like to call it bump-and-run navigation.) In the end, however, some people can’t get comfortable with the limitations. Try to buy from a retailer with a return policy of at least a few weeks in case a robo vac isn’t a fit for your lifestyle. It will look stupid sometimes, and that can shatter the illusion that you have an artificially intelligent magic machine.
