Yet for as long as they’ve been around, robot vacuums have been a little gimmicky, with lots of us feeling unsure of whether they could do a thorough job of cleaning our homes. The 350dia x H91mm lozenge can get right under all but the lowest furniture, and when it moves from hardwood floors to rugs and carpet it boosts the motor speed for better cleaning results. The twin rubber brush bar is easy to untangle and exceedingly good at picking up pet hair. This bar doesn’t extend right to the edge of the vacuum like they do on the Dyson, but two spinning brushes sweep dust into its path, so it can clean right up to the skirting boards.

The map is highly accurate though, and as long as no new objects are introduced to the area, you will see fewer and fewer collisions with each cycle. By updating every second, the robot has fewer collisions with objects and furniture. Not autonomous smart home would be complete without the ability to give voice commands to your vacuum. The parallel line formation of the vacuum lines is meant to behave more like a human would vacuum and reduces the need for alternate routes.

It makes it one of the more efficient robots around unlike the 880 that can miss spots here and there. The thing that holds it back from being a bestseller is the price. But for those who can afford it, it is a really nice luxury item to have at home.

If your furniture is not at least five and a half inches off the ground, the robot won’t go under it. In fact, the 980 will do a better job on shag carpeting than most other vacuums of any style. The Dyson 360 Eye can get snagged on long pile shag such as that found in the early 1960s, but the shorter shag of the late 1970s and ‘80s should pose no problems.

But expect to empty them every 1-3 runs and you won’t be disappointed. One final hangover from the original remains; its unwillingness to successfully dock and charge shark cordless after a clean. Frequently, just like a drunk sleeping in his own doorway, the Heurist gets so close to the charger and seems to think, ‘that’ll do’ and just stops.

Inside the bin is also one washable filter, with a secondary filter at the rear. Brand-new it might be, but the 360 Heurist isn’t a great deal different on the outside from the previous model, the 360 Eye. Sure, the new model has a flashier blue-purple paint job, rather than the drab grey of the original, but in terms of size and shape, the two models are identical. The 360 Hyperdymium is decked out in Dyson’s signature blue and nickel motif, with the Verge noting it’s equipped with a 360-degree camera with an LED lighting right for in-the-dark navigation.

As with any Dyson vacuum cleaner – or any robot vacuum cleaner for that matter – you will have to do a bit of maintenance to keep things working well. It picked up mess right up to the edge of a room, sucked dirt out of a carpet, and even coped with a rickety old wooden floor where dirt had become trapped in cracks and dips. This robot vacuum cleaner manages to beat all of the competition. Third, even some more expensive—£300 and up—robot vacuum cleaners can struggle getting right up against walls and tables and other tight spots cleaned. It’s always worth having a look up against walls after your robot vacuum has completed its job as you may find its size, shape and the layout of the device has meant some pesky mess has been missed. This is a problem that’s sure to be fixed as robovacs get smaller and even more effective.

Dyson machines are engineered for continual high performance in normal domestic settings. If a Dyson machine is used in the way it’s intended and it breaks down within the guarantee period, it’s our responsibility to repair or replace it. On the smart home front, there’s an Alexa skill, so you can ask your 360 dyson robot vacuum Heurist to start or stop cleaning from your Echo speaker. Annoyingly, Dyson has still to add the Google Assistant to the mix. Thankfully this all very Dyson-esque, with compartments and segments all popping apart with ease. The 330ml dust bin is on the small side but is super simple to pop out and empty.

The underside reveals a removable and replaceable front brush system and two likely robust and powerful blue wheels. On the right we see the text DUST ANALYTICS, and on the right we see SIDE ACTUATOR. At the back in the removable dust bin we see RADIAL CYCLONE TECHNOLOGY. Navigation is generally very good, too – this robot rarely became stuck in tests, particularly when set up correctly with the app.

As prosthetic technologies become more complex and proprietary, the long-term serviceability is an increasing concern.
