Philips Norelco OneBlade Review: an Electric Shaver with Disposable Blades

No matter what I did, and no matter what product I tried, I couldn’t seem to get rid of them. We tried Philips Norelco’s lower-end rotary models but determined that the brand’s 9000 series performed better, and it was so closely priced that it was a better buy for most people. In our experience, the 4000-series razor didn’t shave closely enough to be worth their bargain prices. However, one member of our test panel has been using a 4000-series model for years, and they still love it, even after trying much more expensive models. The Remington offers generally good performance, but you’ll likely find the shaving experience to be buzzier and potentially more irritating if you don’t maintain a very light touch. All Braun Series 7 models give consistently close, comfortable shaves. The 7071cc comes with the accessories we think most people want or need, including a cleaning system and carrying case.

Philips Norelco’s Multigroom 9000 device comes with 21 different heads and guards, which might seem overwhelming at first glance. But consider the perks of having swappable guards for the precise task of trimming your eyebrows and nose hairs or for cleaning up your sideburns. The trimmer’s greatest strength is its beard maintenance, though, which is why it’s at the top of our list. The steel blades of the DualCut Pro system are made to precisely cut each hair, avoid causing skin irritation, and self-sharpen to cut more hairs in each pass for quicker trimming. The 7100 Philips Norelco Shaver offers a close shave while minimising skin irritation.

I personally prefer it to the click-on trimmer attachments of the more expensive Philips razors. The blades are called ComfortCut by Philips and they’re supposed to be gentle on the skin — we’ll see how that pans out in the performance section later on. A new, high-end manual razor is meant to duplicate the old school, hot-towel-shave experience. Braun offers a Series 8 shaver at select retailers, and that version sells for less than a Series 7 usually does. The S9000 Prestige’s digital battery indicator is more precise than the temperature-gauge-like bar on other models we’ve considered, but both are fine in day-to-day use.

Philips Norelco Shaver

The protective blades made it really feel like the razor was gliding across our face — something we always heard about in shaving commercials but never experienced in real life. The bumpers, along with two lubricating strips, gave us a super-smooth shave. We never felt any irritation or experienced any Remington Shaver bumps or ingrown hairs — even hours after we shaved. Whether you shave your whole face daily, clean up your lines once a week or anything in between, a good razor is essential to your grooming routine. After a few nicks and weeks of not recognizing ourselves in the mirror, two razors made the cut.

I experienced this first hand when I neglected to clean the shaver after three shaves. On the fourth shave, the blades were noticeably cutting worse than when I first got the shaver. If the battery runs flat on you, a 5 Remington Shaver minute charge is all that is needed for 3 minutes of shaving. If you don’t mess around, that is plenty of time for a full shave. From my experience, only frequent shavers will need to change the shaving heads yearly.

You can also consider it if you don’t shave every day as it works decently with longer hairs, even though you’ll have to work a bit harder if they also grow in different directions. The closeness and especially the comfort are good and the more expensive models don’t really bring anything significant in terms of performance. Considering the shaver’s performance and its price, the new Braun Series 5 Philips Norelco 2300 (S1211/81) is in my opinion the current best pick for an inexpensive, rotary razor. The three cutting heads are now exposed and you can remove them one by one and clean them thoroughly with water, again making sure not to mix the blades and combs between them. In order to gain access to the cutters, you must completely detach the shaving unit from the razor.

Simply give it a sacred space in your grooming cabinet, and see how it proves to be an investment that bears charming returns in the long run. If the electric shavers have any advanced features, such as an additional trimmer or quick charging, we’ll try these out to test if they work and if they’re worth the extra money they no doubt command. We’ll usually spend a week or longer testing new electric shavers, and the review process is fairly straightforward – we use them to shave our faces. This helps us see how closely they are capable of shaving, and how easy they are to use and achieve our desired style.
