Dyson 360 Heurist robot vacuum review: most bespoke clean your house can get

There are certainly Dyson fans out there who will buy a Heurist no matter what. If you cannot abide vacuuming, and only want to do it every couple of weeks to grab any spots a robot might have missed, then perhaps this vacuum is for you. However, at £799.99, this is no small investment, especially given the significant weaknesses with this vacuum. However, the Dyson 360 Heurist was not launched in all countries as its design was considered to be incompatible with some styles of living.

The Roomba will go through most bed skirts and low hanging window dressings as they are not heavy enough to trip the touch sensors. The Roomba relies on acoustic and bottom sensors to locate objects, so if you move things around it may collide with them until it remaps the area. The map is highly accurate though, and as long as no new objects are introduced to the area, you will see fewer and fewer collisions with each cycle. By updating every second, the robot has fewer collisions with objects and furniture. Not autonomous smart home would be complete without the ability to give voice commands to your vacuum. In this instance, the Roomba 980 will reverse the bars and attempt to free itself.

Along with the Auto function, you can manually add boundaries yourself via the app—once a room has been mapped. The mapping technology can store multiple maps, meaning you can set it down in your bedroom or kitchen, select the room and let it get to work. If you want good navigation, but don’t want to pay the high-end price of the 900 Series Roombas, I would recommend theRoomba 890next. The 890 has Memory Mapping that helps Roomba to remember where it has been and the route it’s been taking.

Comparing these numbers to that of newer models, even as new as the 900 Series may lead you to think that there’s not much difference in performance, and you’d be right. It’s a cleaning machine that will just keep going in a somewhat randomized pattern until the whole space is clean. While the lines may not be straight, there is something about the shark cordless Roomba 690 that is just plain effective. The usability of theRoomba 890is pretty good, not much different than the Roomba 690, honestly. The Memory Mapping feature does help address tricky areas and help the Roomba from getting stuck there. As another bonus, the 890 model has a full bin indicator light which is something that the 690 does not have.

The majority of robot vacuum cleaners do not need Wi-Fi to work, typically sporting buttons on top of the device to allow you to request the vacuum begins cleaning. You can get robot vacuums with even lower suction power, around 1000Pa, but you’d be sacrificing the quality of clean for a short term saving. We’d recommend looking to the more powerful models when the time is right for you instead.

At the Institute we have often been impressed by the power of Dyson vacuums. In some ways, the Heurist is no exception, but its robotics and connectivity are lacking. The body of the vacuum has a minimal user interface, with only a single button, so the vacuum must be controlled by the app. We found that the Heurist’s connection to wi-fi is very poor, disconnecting itself every few minutes, which meant we couldn’t control it for periods of time. And, as the label on the top of the machine says, the new vac will be powered by one of Dyson’s new “Hyperdymium” motors.

I couldn’t use it to pull a door shut, for example, a task I can do with my stump. And without the extremely expensive addition of a powered wrist, I couldn’t pour oatmeal from a pot into a bowl. Performing tasks the cool bionic way, even though it mimicked having two hands, wasn’t obviously better than doing things my way, sometimes with the help of my legs and feet.
