Alen BreatheSmart 45i Air Purifier SleepScore Labs

The BreatheSmart Classic purifier has a fixed size, but it also offers two interchangeable covers. It is surprisingly lightweight, making it easy to move from room to room. Truth be told, Alen BreatheSmart Classic drain quite a lot of energy given its CADR rated output.

While quite a few devices were cheaper to run, this was nowhere near the highest annual cost. When testing each machine’s ease of use, we looked at a couple of key features. First, we timed how long it took to get the device out of the box and set it up. It took our alen breathesmart testers about five minutes to get the BreatheSmart 75i up and running, which is pretty average when compared to most other models. While we all want to be in a room breathing clean air, some machines are simply too noisy and distracting to make it feel worthwhile.

You do need to take the price of the unit with some consideration. The cost of replacement filters is the true cost of any air purifier. Some companies do have a ridiculously low price of the air purifier itself because they earn money on the replacement filters. Alen BreatheSmart Classic has Alen’s signature H13 HEPA filters. In short, they are brilliant even at removing the smallest air particulates such as small dust particles, smoke particles, pollen, mold, mold spores, certain bacteria, and so on. In this review of the Alen BreatheSmart Classic, we’ll look at the specifications that make the Classic one of the best air purifiers for large rooms.

To get the purifier up and running is ridiculously simple. Once everything is unwrapped, open the front hatch via the air inlets on the side of the machine and slot in the HEPA filter, with the pre-filter facing towards you. Then once connected to mains, hit the power button and you’re good to go. Although its price comes in at the higher end of the mid-range market, you’ll struggle to find another purifier for under $450 that boasts 5 air changes per hour in an 800 sq. Ft room with a CADR rating of 245, along with the real-world performance to back it up.

The HEPA Silver filter targets dust, mold, mildew, and bacteria; HEPA Fresh Plus target VOCs; and HEPA Odorcell captures odors from wet dogs, litter fumes, and even a teenager’s room. Despite your choices, you’re always getting clean air in return. Unlike other air purifiers, the Alen Breathesmart Classic is entirely automatic with its fan speeds, rather than manually.

In the short-term the cost of Lasko Box Fan Classic might appear quite high but the important part – the long-term cost – is minimal. Let’s do a simple calculation to figure out how much electricity will the Classic model need. We’ll presume it runs continuously for a week at peak speed. Every time you turn on your purifier, it is recommended that you start at the highest speed for at least an hour. The sound frequency of this purifier falls in the pink noise range.

At the top fan speed setting, the noise levels rise to 56 dB which is not ideal. Granted, the smaller alen breathesmart FLEX also has 55 dB noise levels at Turbo Speed but the new 45i and 75i models have managed to reduce that number to 49 dB, a considerable difference. However, at the highest speed – Turbo Speed – it consumes 105W of energy. It is a large room air purifier, larger air consumption is expected, but the Classic model does drain more energy than comparable energy-efficient large room air purifiers. This model has four fan speeds, and at its highest, it can produce up to 49 decibels of sound frequency.
