However, as you’d expect, it wants to take the design a step further, by potentially introducing an innovative robot vacuum cleaner which can climb stairs. Dyson has built up a reputation for its unusual designs and rightly so when you consider how iconic some of its products have become. From air purification to hair care and, of course, vacuum cleaners, Dyson has slowly and successfully branched out into new sectors and now commands a presence in each market. It takes a while to get accustomed to the Roomba J7+, the $850 robot vacuum, and the Braava Jet M6, the $450 robot mop, both from iRobot. The devices rely on cameras, sensors and artificial intelligence to create a map of your home. Once a map is created, you can label each room and tell the robots to clean specific areas or to clean everywhere.
The Roomba’s run time is 75 minutes, but charge time is only 90 minutes, so you can schedule it to clean up twice a day or more. Alternatively, command it ad hoc to pick up crumbs after mealtimes. Quiet mode is a setting on the 360 Eye that will prolong the battery life by making the vacuum use less suction. In normal mode, the decibel rating is just about 57db, which is just about as loud as your alarm clock or hair dryer. In quiet mode the decibels are reduced to about 45 with is about as loud as a normal conversation in a restaurant. The camera sensors need light to work, and if you turn off all your lights, neither vacuum will be able to “see” and won’t clean very well, if at all.
Overall, the V6 collected 94% of debris on low pile carpet and 92% of debris on high pile carpet, averaging out all debris types tested. Oh hardwoods, theDyson V6cleaned up 87% of debris (which divided out into 100% for kitty litter and sugar, 99% for rice, and only 50% of cereal). From these findings, we can confidently say that the V6 is not designed for cleaning up large debris on hardwood floors. TheDyson V10cordless stick vacuum is Dyson’s newest stick model to date. It features the highest level of suction and lowest maintenance costs of any of the Dyson V-Series stick vacuums.
Despite being a few years old, the Roomba S9+ is still arguably the most advanced – and expensive – robot vac around at the moment, and a veritable stonker it is, too. Like the Roomba i3+, i7+ and new J7+, the flagship S9+ ships with an automatic bin-emptying function that is truly hands off. We would always shark cordless advise going for a combination system of this nature, especially if you have pets in the home because the alternative is having to empty the bot’s tiny bin yourself on a pretty regular basis. In terms of design and function, the new Roomba J7+ is, without a shadow of doubt, our new favourite robot vac.
Dyson is always great in terms of suction and air-technology, but it’s not quite there for robotics yet. Robot vacuums and cleaners cannot entirely replace manual cleaning. I know for myself, I wasn’t always home when I needed to have a quick vacuum done.
According to Dyson, the robot maps each room using its camera and divides it into quadrants. It then goes back and forth in a grid pattern until that entire portion of the room is clean before moving to the next. I tried picking up the robot and placing it in a different room and was impressed to find it not only recognized what had happened, but returned to its original spot to finish what had already been started. So if you’re patient, the 360 Eye will eventually find and clean your mess—so long as it’s not liquid (for that you’ll want a mopping robot like iRobot’s Braava Jet 240($799.99 at Currys)). Without it you will need to empty its tiny 470ml bin yourself – a messy job – and on a very regular basis if you have any hairy pets.
