Dyson 360 Eye vs Roomba 980

There’s also a decent size water tank and the option to use a reusable mop or some disposable mops when your hard floors need a stronger once over. TheiRobot Roomba i7+ (£600)has a standard 0.4 litre dirt canister but the contents are transferred to a big dirt bag in the charging base when it docks. The bag can hold 30 robot bins, so you won’t need to replace it for weeks on end.

Stay tuned next year for my review, if I can get a hands on a review unit. Meanwhile, make sure to check my other Dyson vacuum cleaner reviews if you are new to Dyson. Dyson’s late entry in the U.S. robotic vacuum market is an impressively intelligent cleaner, but could use a bit of tech polish. In addition to letting you name your vacuum , I could track the Dyson 360 Eye’s activity and look back at the activity log to see how it had cleaned my house.

To wake it, press the button once and wait for a dotted ring of blue light to appear. Pink lights indicate a software upgrade, while dotted red lights are for troubleshooting, depending on the pattern. If the Terminator set its deadly sights on dust bunnies, it’d probably look something like the Dyson 360 Eye($799.99 at Currys). While it shares the same circular shape as the Roomba, it’s much taller at 4.7 inches, but less wide at 9.5 inches. It comes in gunmetal gray, with blue accents around the camera and in the removable dustbin.

Hence you will need to select a single suction level and stick with it, unless you indulge in the faff of programming it in the Dyson app to ramp up the power in certain areas. This reviewer tried it out on the highest power and it sucked big time, in a good way. However, the battery started depleting rapidly and after around 30 minutes it was desperate to get back to its base for a recharge. So I set it to the lowest suction level and, lo and behold, it still sucked well while the battery lasted a full 63 minutes – and this was on a combination of hard floor, carpet and lots of rugs. Truly, this is what we all dreamed of when the idea of robot vacuum cleaners was first mooted.

However, at £799.99, this is no small investment, especially given the significant weaknesses with this vacuum. Nevertheless, this patent show that Dyson is certainly still a brand to watch when it comes to cleaning tech. In my personal experience with the Dyson 360 Heurist Robot Vacuum Cleaner, I’ve found that while the performance in terms of pick-up is good, the design struggles in its intelligence. So it can collect mess, but it can’t navigate as effectively as other brands.

RoMan gets a little bit of help when a human supervisor points out a region of the branch where grasping might be most effective. The robot doesn’t have any fundamental knowledge about what a tree branch actually is, and this lack of world knowledge is a fundamental problem with autonomous systems of all kinds. Having a human leverage our vast experience into a small amount of guidance can make RoMan’s job much easier. And indeed, this time RoMan manages to successfully grasp the branch and noisily haul it across the room. For the foreseeable future, ARL is making sure that its autonomous systems are safe and robust by keeping humans around for both higher-level reasoning and occasional low-level advice. Humans might not be directly in the loop at all times, but the idea is that humans and robots are more effective when working together as a team.

The unnamed robovac comes in the same striking nickel blue color as its predecessor, and has tank treads and a detachable dust bin, just like Dyson’s previous forays into this product category. It also looks like the device has the Heurist’s 360-degree camera with LED lighting ring. Those LEDs are important, as they ensure the device can navigate in the dark — handy if you want your robovac to clean when you’re out or asleep.

If your home is filled with low-rise obstacles, then, this robot vacuum might not be a good fit. That said, when it comes to rugs, doorsteps and other gentle interruptions to your floor, the caterpillar tracks located on each side work really well. Cleverly, because the 360 Eye can surmount such obstacles with ease, the direction of the vacuum doesn’t change — and it can continue its concentric, 90-degree march around your house. All robot vacuums will try to pick up pet hair but, as with other types of dirt, models with higher suction will generally do a better job.

The robots can also all be taken off their charging stations, put in a room with the door shut, and made to clean there only, although then they usually won’t return to base, because they don’t know where the base is. However, the latest and greatest robots not only map your home accurately, they also let you specify which part of the map is which, so you can dispatch your dyson robot vacuum robot pal to clean only the bathroom or home cinema space. The 360 Heurist uses SLAM and a set of bright LEDs to navigate its way around a home, and in this respect it worked exceedingly well. However, as is the case with all robot vacs, you really do need to leave it to its own devices and try not interrupt it because it learns new stuff during every cleaning session.
