New Dyson robot vacuum cleaner spotted in FCC filings, pics

It’s not a lock – there’s no absolute definite answer until Dyson makes an announcement, but an appearance with the FCC like this generally means we’re going to see the product appear in stores in the near future. Above and below you’re seeing photos from the FCC listing of this bissell crosswave cordless vacuum. You can find this in one form over at FCCID.io via The Verge. This model will not necessarily look exactly the same once it’s ready for full release on store shelves. Restrictions are placed by drawing a box on the map, of which accurate placement can be tricky.

I simply pressed the power button, which sits on the top in front of the camera, to turn it on and then pressed it again and the Dyson 360 Eye took off from its charging base and started cleaning my floors. That button also serves as a status indicator, showing you with LED lights when it’s powered on, cleaning, paused and running low on battery power. If you like the look of the Eufy budget model further up our list why not consider this, the X8 Hybrid RoboVac. It’s more money, but the X8 bristles with a raft of excellent features and it’s also great if you have a mix of floor surfaces to tackle. Not only does it vacuum hard floors and carpets, switching between both with ease, it’s got a 250ml water tank too. That means there’s on-board mopping functionality, which we’ve found works a treat.

Once you’ve downloaded the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play, setup is relatively easy thanks to detailed prompts. It should be noted that the 360 Eye only works on 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, so if you have a dual-band router, make sure you connect to the right channel. If you want to immediately vacuum straight out of the box, you can simply press the power button.

WIRED has taken the risk of a premature robot uprising and tested these smart vacuum cleaners, reaping the spotless benefits they bring. You might think all robot vacuums cleaners are pretty much the same, in both features and looks, but they differ quite a lot. You’ll find robovacs ideal for tackling pet hairs or mopping up your floors as well as cheaper options that focus on getting the job done with no frills. It’s also worth taking a peek at our top picks for the best cordless vacuums around, as a robot and a cordless can make for top cleaning pals.

There’s also a docking station, where the X8 will head to if it’s getting low on battery power. There isn’t any self-emptying though, so the compact 600ml bin needs manual intervention. However, program your X8 to make regular cleaning forays and there’ll be very little to empty anyway. According to iRobot, the i3 and i7 have the same suction power but in our tests the i3 seemed to be a bit better – its twin rubber rollers performed extremely well on hard floor and superbly on carpet.

The 960 uses the same motor that is found in the 800 Series Roombas, which gives it a slightly shorter run time and less power on carpet than then Roomba 980 model. If your house is primarily hardwoods, it is likely that you won’t notice the change in performance between the 960 and the 980, but for carpeted areas, this could be a different story. This robot vacuum allows you to schedule cleanings and maintenance, as well as document digital cleaning maps, a feature also on the Roomba 980 model. Dysonalso offers an autonomous robot vacuum, but there’s only one model—the Dyson 360 eye.

You can look at the design for clues as to when you might encounter problems. For homes with such terrain you want a robot vacuum with a good amount of clearance, so its front does not get stuck on raised surfaces. Chunky wheels able to move in and out of the frame also increase that clearance when needed. Dyson goes even further, using a tank track-like underside rather than wheels.

It’ll send you notifications when the 360 Eye is cleaning or if something goes wrong. You can also set a cleaning routine, toggle between Quiet and Max modes, and view how long the robot has been cleaning and its remaining battery life. The Activity tab shows you a map of the areas cleaned in each session, as well as the occasional cleaning fact. It includes instructions for how to clean and maintain the robot’s various parts, a troubleshooting manual, diagrams of the robot, and Dyson’s customer support information. The Dyson 360 Eye is the one of the best robot vacuums you can buy thanks to its impressive cleaning and navigation abilities, but you can find similarly equipped alternatives for less money.

For many homes, this may simply not be enough time to get the job done. The Dyson V10 has a dust bin capacity of 0.76 L, over twice the capacity of the Roomba lineup. The design is obviously quite different than any of the robot irobot vacuum cleaner models, but I believe is still worth mentioning. Comparing these numbers to that of newer models, even as new as the 900 Series may lead you to think that there’s not much difference in performance, and you’d be right.

If Dyson can fix the Wi-Fi issue, update the app for the U.S. market and maybe get the cleaning cycle to 1 hour and 15 minutes per charge, iRobot could have a robo-fight on its hands. Watching the Dyson 360 clean and navigate its environment, one is immediately impressed by its intelligence and problem-solving skills. I watched over and over again as it encountered rugs, chairs, uneven surfaces and obstacles and could almost see it working out possible navigation and cleaning solutions. In my home, it did get stuck under my futon at one point, though.
