Schwinn Bicycles

Amateur cycling clubs also popped up around the city, like the Lakeview Cycling Club with headquarters on Orchard Street. Geoffrey Baer takes us back to when Chicago was called “the Detroit of bicycles” in this week’s Ask Geoffrey. Schwinn hopes to win over new customers with the introduction of a new electric bicycle. “It’s great to have a local company that wants to help the community,” Page said. “Detroit is the city that makes things. And seeing Detroit Bikes make bikes and be such a big part of our community, it’s like back to the future.”

At the close of the 1920s, the stock market crash decimated the American motorcycle industry, taking Excelsior-Henderson with it. With no buyers, Excelsior-Henderson motorcycles were discontinued in 1931. W. Schwinn returned to Chicago and in 1933 introduced the Schwinn B-10E Motorbike, actually a youth’s bicycle designed to imitate a motorcycle. The company revised the model the next year and renamed it the Aerocycle. The bicycle would eventually come to be known as a paperboy bike or cruiser.

Some Schwinn IC4 riders use the Kinetic app to track their output levels during rides, though I have not tested that myself. Until the recent rise of quality TIG-welded and composite bicycle frames, mongoose bmx bike most high quality lightweight bicycles used lugs to join their frame tubing. Fillet-brazing is an alternative method of constructing high-quality lightweight bicycle frames without the use of lugs.

Unlike its progenitors, the Klunker proved incapable of withstanding hard off-road use, and after an unsuccessful attempt to reintroduce the model as the Spitfire 5, it was dropped from production. With their aging product line, Schwinn failed to dominate the huge sport bike boom of 1971–1975, which saw millions of 10-speed bicycles sold to new cyclists. Schwinn did allow some dealers to sell imported road racing bikes, and by 1973 was using the Schwinn name on the Le Tour, a Japanese-made low-cost sport/touring 10-speed bicycle. Schwinn developed strong trading relationships with two Japanese bicycle manufacturers in particular, Bridgestone and National/Panasonic.

The price is higher than other Schwinn models, one way the Canadian-owned Schwinn brand can assess demand for future, higher-priced American-made Schwinn products. There are men’s bikes, ladies’ bikes, kids’ bikes, even tandem bicycles. Riding is a great way to have fun and bond with family members, especially with the great bikes and scooters huffy mountain bike you’ll find at Sam’s Club. Still, to make its expansion pay off, Trek will have to sail against the trade winds; it makes a higher profit on its lower-end, foreign-made products. “It’s definitely getting tougher to compete. You can get a complete bike offshore for what it costs us to weld one,” said Zapata Espinoza, Trek’s brand manager.

I can’t speak to Schwinn’s reputation across the Seven Seas, but the business was certainly making dough on its home continent. Even when the national bike boom reached its inevitable end around the turn of the century , Ignaz Schwinn was able to navigate the obstacle course deftly, pushing forward while most of his competitors sunk into obscurity. Into the smog of the combustion engine era, Arnold, Schwinn & Co. pedaled on.
