During the bicycle boom of the 1970’s customers learned to equate lugged frame construction with higher quality. Richard’s Bicycle Book of 1972, a popular title of the day, states emphatically that, “In better bikes the frame is lugged and brazed…” and does not mention any other quality framebuilding method. Customers preferred lugged construction and equated lugless frames with huffy mountain bike Varsitys and Continentals or, worse, low-quality department-store bicycles. But what eventually drove Schwinn into the turmoil that led the company to file for Chapter 11 in 1992 was it’s inability to cope with management and quality problems, as well as some unsuccessful investments. Basically, the company had to choose in where to produce bicycles at a more competitive prices.

Fillet-brazing is an alternative method of constructing high-quality lightweight bicycle frames without the use of lugs.
The fillet-brazed CrMo frame construction of Schwinn’s second class of lightweight bicycles – the Superior, Sports Tourer and Super Sport – was unique. The production flow for these bicycles began with frame fabrication in the handbuild part of the Chicago Schwinn factory; a low-volume production area. Frame tubes were mitered in a jig mongoose bmx bike by machine, and then the remaining fabrication work (brazing, filleting, braze-ons, and finishing) was done by hand. The seat and down tubes, as well as the top tube on the largest frame sizes, are slightly oversize at 29.5 mm in diameter. Ideas like balloon tires were introduced in 1933 and soon became the standard of the industry.
Many German business owners in the U.S. faced considerable scrutiny and sales losses as anti-German sentiment spread during both World Wars. To compensate, some went the extra mile to flag wave and prove their American patriotism. Having made their fame on the “WORLD” bicycle, they weren’t going to try to pass themselves off as nationalists. They would, however, make a point of celebrating the “Made in the USA” aspect of the brand above the “German engineering” element.

A steel frame is sturdy huffy mountain bike and absorbs some vibrations when riding, but is the heaviest of the three. For more than 125 years, Schwinn has been giving people the joy and freedom to get out and enjoy the ride.
I can’t speak to Schwinn’s reputation across the Seven Seas, but the business was certainly making dough on its home continent. Even when the national bike boom reached its inevitable end around the turn of the century , Ignaz Schwinn was able to navigate the obstacle course deftly, pushing forward while most of his competitors sunk into obscurity. Into the smog of the combustion engine era, Arnold, Schwinn & Co. pedaled on.
