There’s also now support for DJI’s smart panorama modes like sphere, a 180-degree view, and wide-angle, and my favorite feature, Trimmed Download. It lets you split clips before transferring them to your phone for editing. I don’t use the DJI Fly app for editing very often, but when I do it’s almost always for short clips I want to share quickly. Trimmed Download is perfect for that, saving time and storage space on your phone. DJI does have a decent track record of bringing useful software updates to its products. The first Mavic Mini received a massive upgrade last year which enabled things like the cinelike profile and added the ability to take RAW photos in addition to JPG.
The DJI Mini 2 is the third drone to use the DJI Fly app. This more simplistic experience than the DJI GO 4 app makes it easy for novice pilots to safely fly their drone. You’ll get a map and some drone telemetry, but many of the advanced settings and controls have been stripped away. The remote control with which you control the drone has a shutter button and start and stop of video, and you also control the angle of the camera with a wheel in front of the controller itself. Optically, the camera is the same with a 24mm wide angle, which can take still images in 12 Mp, from a 1/2.3″ CMOS image sensor, but thus upgraded with 4K video. If you need it, there is also a 4x – digital – zoom, which is easily accessible in the DJI app.
At the end of the day, I’m an athlete just like you looking for the most detail possible on a new purchase – so my review is written from the standpoint of how I used the device. Ensure that the propellers and arms are installed securely before each flight. DJI drones have a long list of accessories available to them. Not only does the market catch on and help these popular drones excel, but DJI themselves also put out a great selection of add-ons and replacement parts. The Mini 2 has, so far, overcome all of the video hiccups we identified with the Mavic Mini.
There are also potential security concerns with DJI drones. The US Interior Department and the Department of Justice are both reviewing — or have outright banned — the use of foreign-made drones. In December 2020, the Trump administration added DJI to a commerce blacklist, citing ties to the Chinese government. The same controller that was introduced with the Mavic Air 2. The phone now sits on top of the controller and it’s way easier to use.
The only downside to the new power is how you’ll be tempted to push it. I twice ran into conditions where I was unable to use the Return to Home dji fly automated flight system due to excessive wind speeds. If you want to fly in various conditions, you’ll need something heavier and more powerful.
The camera still has the same, small 1/2.3-inch 12MP sensor as the original Mini, but it produces much nicer photos than before. JPGs that you get right off the drone are fantastic, and you can “enhance” them within the DJI app. It applies some subtle adjustments to the overall contrast of the image, lifts shadows, and adds a bit of life to overall colors.
