Southwest Pet Policy

While many people have kept many different species of animals in captivity over the course of human history, only a relative few have been kept long enough to be considered domesticated. Other types of animal, notably monkeys, have never been domesticated but are still sold and kept as pets. There are also inanimate objects that have been kept as “pets”, either as a form of a game or humorously (e.g. the Pet Rock or Chia Pet). Some wild animals are kept as pets, such as tigers, even though this is illegal. Pets have commonly been considered private property, owned by individual persons. However, many legal protections have existed with the intention of safeguarding pets’ (and other animals’) well-being.

If you’re traveling into the U.S., your dog’s age and vaccine requirements depend on the risk of dog rabies where your trip starts. Dogs arriving from high-risk countries need to be at least 16 weeks old and have their rabies shots before traveling into the U.S. Pet strollers must be checked at the ticket counter, and all checked bag fees apply. All dogs (carry-on and checked) traveling to the U.S. must meet government regulations on vaccinations.

You can travel with your pet carrier and 1 personal item, but you will not be permitted to bring a carry-on bag in addition to a pet carrier and personal item. We only accept checked pets at the ticket counter for active-duty U.S. Depending on animal breed and size, they can travel as a carry-on or be transported through American Airlines Cargo.
