It earned its cutesy nickname because of its resemblance to the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. When I say “resemblance” I mean that if you happened to walk into a poorly lit room and spot a watch on the wrist of someone standing ten yards away, you might be able to mistake one model for the other. All jokes aside, there is certainly a whiff of inspiration about the Casioak that is, in my opinion, a self-/industry-aware nod to a gap in the market that Casio eventually got around to filling.

The watch feels small at the most sensitive parts of the wrist, but expands in its mid-section. It’s similar to wearing an oval watch, like a Patek Philippe Ellipse. Part of this is an illusion – the strap starts tapering almost immediately, making the horizon of the north and south poles of the GA-2100 disappear along with it. Still, that optical effect has a real impact on the wearing experience. It’s all about what you see when you look at your wrist.
The Casio GA A1ER also known as “CasiOak” was one of the most popular watches of 2019, and it’s easy to see why.. With the Casio GA A1ER you get a nice men’s watch with a bracelet made with a light type of steel which make the watch super comfortable to wear. The watch has both analog and a digital display. Fashion in-jokes have a short half-life, yet this piece has stuck around, even after it became clear the similarity wasn’t intentional.
Light, comfortable, very high eye appeal for the money, main hands surprisingly readable, other features not so much and I like how it doesn’t scream G Shock in design, size and case wording. But overcoming the attachment to resin is difficult. It took me quite a while to get over the addition of carbon fiber elements to certain g shock protection product lines, but the textural congruity of those materials eventually “won me over”. Metal, however, never seemed a natural fit for Casio’s affordable and aesthetically accessible watches. However, it would appear that there is not only a market for these metal-cased products but also a lot of reasons for them to exist.
Over 30 years of collecting, my fascination with the technical capabilities of both vintage and modern timepieces has never abated and it is a privilege to be able to share this passion through writing. If it is more important to flash the brand name in a smaller, lighter package then the CasiOaks may be just the watch for you. Do not misunderstand me, I can see how this range makes complete commercial sense to Casio. They have a hugely successful brand and why not expand it, perhaps to cover other equipment such as backpacks or sunglasses. This I would wholly support , but if the name G-Shock appears on a watch, I genuinely feel it should be able to do what a G-Shock does. With pride in its unchanging form, the G-SHOCK mission is one of continuous advancement, always transcending the times, conventional wisdom, and the limits of imagination.
He’s looking for any excuse to slag the watch; and will ignore information sitting there in black and white to get there. The whole dial is protected by a mineral crystal which has no obvious AR coating and probably will scratch in time but still affords 200m of water resistance. An attractive, minimalist feature analog/digital G-SHOCK that puts a traditional spin on classic Square aesthetics.
The surprise, though, is that I simply don’t care. Once again, this watch isn’t about the stuff it can do. It’s a G-Shock that’s purely about its own aesthetic appeal. The spring bars are quick-release but are configured in proprietary set up. Wearing the GA-2100SU-A1JF made me feel like I was wearing a Royal Oak Offshore. Even lounging in sweatpants I was crushing it so hard.
