Frankly the uses you cite for locking pliers seem better suited for a vise. Yet I still feel a 6point socket or an oversized adjustable wrench will do the job quite easily. If else fails get a dremel and cut the nut on opposite sides, on the flats , place an open end – crescent wrench over the two cut sides and give it a spin, it will break the nut. Anyway, here I doubt it’s the case of heavy duty tools, but a socket wrench on 1/2” system is the best tool for the job. Also bear in mind that the tool means 50% of the job done.

I would like to see pics of the grey one your co-worker has. They work well but I have never owned a bike with these before. I was surprised by the Made in USA Sun Levanter alloy rims front and back with intact labels. Don’t know anything about them but at least they were made here. Both are fairly true although the front has some spokes that are a tad loose.
