Just as rumors have been floating about a possible rugged Apple Watch, Casio has unveiled its first G-Shock rugged smartwatch using Google’s Wear OS platform. The GSW-H1000, part of Casio’s rugged G-Squad Pro lineup, has a host of sports features and is also the first G-Shock watch with a color display. The color of black and grey is more accurately described as a dark grey and light grey.

Other than these, the watch has a Step Tracker that monitors your steps, smartly uses the Bluetooth feature to sync the time, and also doesn’t cost much. In fact, it’s the introductory timepiece of the collection with Bluetooth. The watch, unlike the ones before it, supports Bluetooth connectivity and a pedometer. Other notable essential functions that this watch has include the timer and stopwatch features, which have been tweaked to fit the tastes of fitness enthusiasts. Other than that, most GA-700 models have the same features as the rest of the collection, though in the case of the GA-700UC , a few of the colors used are quite different.

In April of 1983, the G-SHOCK DW-5000C was unveiled, and a TV news station tested out the watch live, including whacking it with a hockey stick, as if it was a puck. The G-SHOCK timepiece survived, and the world was introduced to the legendary line. One slight oddity with the GSH-H1000 is that Casio included very few watchfaces. You only get an information-dense digital face, a basic analog option, and one that matches the layout of the monochrome LCD. That latter setting was my favorite because it felt less jarring shifting between always-on and active display modes. Obviously, you can download whatever watchface you like from the Play Store, but it’s clear that Casio designed this watch around the dual-layer mode.

In September 2018, to mark the 35th anniversary of G-Shock, Casio released a collection of four clear model of G-Shock watches called “The Glacier Gold” collection. New limited models are introduced more frequently throughout the year. Special models are released upon the anniversary celebration of the G-Shock brand and are sold through selected retail channels. The DW models are standard battery-powered G-Shocks while GW models of the G-Shock come with either Tough Solar or Multi-Band atomic timekeeping or both.
