In 1968, in an effort to market a children’s bicycle with an automotive theme, Huffman designers added a car-type steering wheel in place of handlebars to the Rail frame, which became the Wheel. In mid-1968, Huffman released the Flaming Stack chain guard, which was designed to look like the distinctive side exhaust pipe covers on the Corvette sports car. Later that same year, Huffman released a new Slingshot model with 16″ front dragster wheel, and 20″ rear. The new 1969 models where the last year for the three-bar Rail frame style. Horace Huffman sold the company in 1925 and formed the Huffman Manufacturing Co., which eventually became Huffy Corp. The company’s stock plummeted from $6.80 a share in December 2003 to 58 cents in August, when the New York Stock Exchange suspended trading because the company’s market value had fallen too low. The company did well in the 1980’s and grew substantially, however, they had trouble breaking out of the entry-level price market with their bicycles. The shift of jobs among mass-market bike companies began more than a decade ago. Excel Group Inc. was a leader in the shift, moving production to Brazil, Taiwan and China. Cheap labor allowed companies in Asia to clobber U.S. companies on price and capture about 45 percent of the market here, according to statistics compiled by the Bicycle Manufacturers Association in 1996. About 90 percent of those imports are from China and Taiwan, the trade group said.

Huffy Bicycles had manufacturing and assembly facilities in Azusa, California , and Ponca City Oklahoma , but largely manufactured most of their bicycles in Celina, Ohio, and at one time was Celina’s largest employer. At their peak, the bicycle division manufactured over two million bicycles per year and were the free world’s largest bike company. The growth of the corporation during the 1980s was significant and Huffy was nearly a Fortune 500 Company.
