It struck him that a watch floating within a rubber case would be impervious to shocks. After a bunch of testing and design with toughness in mind, the brand was born. Nearly 35 years and hundreds of models later, G-SHOCK is still best known for being some of the toughest, hard-wearing watches that money can buy.
The watch features a double LED light which is surprisingly powerful but only stays on for a 3 second burst. The hands of the watch also have lume applied so they remain visible for a long period during the night even without using the LED light to read the time. Three new Mudmaster models have become the first ever G-SHOCKs to feature forged carbon case components. The face of the watch is marked with large Arabian numerals at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o’clock for easy reading. The face is illuminated by a Super Illuminator, high-brightness auto LED light to ensure high visibility under virtually any conditions imaginable. In addition, Twin Sensor capabilities provide instant access to direction and temperature information when needed under tough conditions.
It easily survived the bumpy ride, being totally submerged in mud, an encounter with a hostile local, and an ATV that seemed to catch fire briefly. Of course, that’s a fraction of what the Mudmaster is built to withstand and just a small piece of the performance it promises, and the GGB100 packs new durability features and tech at a characteristically approachable price. For 2019, the new flagship Casio G-Shock watch in the $300-$400 USD range is the Mudmaster GG-B100 model family. It consists of a few color variations, with this mostly black-toned reference GGB100-1A being the version I reviewed.
Certainly, we see Casio continuing its iterative approach to product improvement by building on what they have done in the past — but having said that, this G-Shock is radically different from models made just a few years ago. New features, such as Casio’s use of carbon material, as well as the new case construction, mean that the look and feel of the GG-B100 are worth experiencing even if the model isn’t right for you. Casio did an excellent job, and I find myself liking the GG-B100 as a product as much as I did the G-Shock GW9400 Rangeman. The G-SHOCK Mudmaster GG-B100 is a purpose-built, bombproof watch for all outdoorsmen.
It’s a muddy and somewhat swampy part of the trail and it hadn’t been made any better by the rain. Nathan sat on a rock while waiting for Rocky to finish up and spotted something nearby. To his delighted surprise, g shock protection it was the Mudmaster, up to its eyeballs in crud and still ticking away. For most normal watches this story would have ended with a trip to the watchmaker or even to a retailer for a new purchase.
When you press the top right button you get the seconds hand now pointing north for you AND a digital readout in bearing degrees for the direction you are currently facing. You can also change this readout to a NSEW readout rather than a specific bearing. The watch also allows you to drop a virtual pin on a location and then have the watch indicate direction for you to return to that location later. The numbers at 12,3,6 and 9 are easily legible and there is a digital display at the 6 position giving you a digital clock as well as the analogue hands. Just be aware that around 6pm and 6am the digital part is hard to read as the sword hour hand passes over it.

As a result the watch needs a big battery and does not come offered with a solar powered version. Many of the other G-Shocks now have this and I would happily pay another $100 for a slightly bulkier and solar powered version. Even with the Bluetooth power drain Casio could maybe create a hybrid set up and have a replaceable battery too to help when the watch is using a lot of features . Tied in to this I’d also love to be able to use the LED for longer because its so bright its useful as a nighttime camp flashlight when going to the toilet in the middle of the night. There is a digital stopwatch function available from the push button menu and there is also an alarm set and countdown timer function too.
