Performance wise it is a beast for me. I find that applying some Vaseline on the area and then spraying helps longevity as well (good for your skin, too!). However, I’m youngish so my experience has been positive since most of my peers don’t remember or weren’t around for the 70s or 80s and haven’t smelled this. If anything this cologne gets the most positive reaction from younger women out of all my colognes.
I’m not sure why this scent is so polarizing, but it definitely can be too overwhelming for some occasions. It’s just such an amazing green leathery Polo Ralph Lauren t shirt tobacco-ey scent that smells like money to me. I still have about 5 mL left in my 1995 bottle, so I can’t judge the current formulation.
My Mrs hates it but I keep going back to it for more. Not an everyday one for me it has a time and place and will last me for ages. My parents just celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary this week and of course he wore Polo when he took mom out to dinner in his best tweed suit.
I will, however, note that this isn’t a safe blind buy. It is a scent that will fit the person and by that I mean it has an aura people are either extremely fond of, or shy away from. I say this because I wear this daily and a friend wanted it after smelling it on me.

Hopefully, it will stay around for a long, long time. Workplaces and society in general are less tolerant of fragrances than they used to be. It has impacted Polo’s wearability in 2019, polo dress shirts and you don’t smell it as much as you used to. Supposedly, it’s been reformulated to reflect this and I’ve read that a lot of men prefer the vintage Cosmair formula to today’s version.
