When robot vacuums first hit the market this was a feature that consumers could only dream of, but today it’s an actual reality. Not only are there multiple models that empty their dustbins on their own when docked, but there are several we’ve reviewed in this guide alone. Some great options with this feature include the iRobot Roomba s9+, the Roomba i7+, and the Shark IQ Robot XL. This model has a simple yet somewhat futuristic look to it, which is appreciated.
In August 2012, the 500 series was superseded by the 600 series, which added the AeroVac Bin and advanced cleaning head as standard features. In 2017 they released the 690, which has Wi-Fi connectivity so it can be started with an app and various personal-assistant software. The Roomba works by using smart sensors that allow the robot to adjust to your home’s features and layout. These sensors also allow Roomba to navigate under and around furniture, and along edges, while the Cliff Detect technology keeps it from falling down stairs. The auto-adjust cleaning head automatically adjusts its height to clean carpets and hard floors.
The Roborock S7 is a mapping robot that uses lidar sensors to map your home in minutes. It also gives you the option of room-specific cleaning commands and allows you to set keep-out zones. This is essential as it doesn’t have AI obstacle avoidance, so will get stuck in regular robot traps such as clusters of cables.
Anti-collision and drop sensors keep it from damaging furniture or falling down the stairs. While the navigation is effective the machine fails to distinguish between carpeting and hard surfaces, meaning it may end up eventually accidentally mopping your carpet. The mop feature is a welcome addition, it tends to be less effective than dedicated robotic mopping options.
Shag and other high-pile rugs may have too high a threshold for the robot to pass over, or the fibers could clog the brush. Some models will even feature an automated higher suction setting for deep cleaning carpets. Roombas before the seventh-generation models do not map out the rooms they are cleaning.
