Another factor that plays into its poor legibility is that this particular Mudmaster uses a negative display for the digital readout. It’s hard to use any of the functions during the day much less the night. However, while you might think that anything that keeps out water would easily be able to prevent mud ingress as well, the small particles in mud and dust present challenges of their own. These “mud-resistant” watches use a special “filter” behind the buttons and a steel case back covered by a layer of plastic resin. In testing, mud didn’t seem to hurt the watch’s functions at all, but it is hard to completely clean from the many nooks, crannies, and facets of the Mudmaster’s complex case. In addition to offering shock resistance, the watch is constructed for mud resistance and is ready to withstand working amid mud and rubble.
The rugged dust and mud-resistant watch, which is designed to survive in the toughest environments, has also been re-configured to come in 1.9mm slimmer than previous versions. Anyone considering the Mudmaster will be aware it’s a large watch and must be comfortable wearing one, but naturally, it will look massive on a smaller wrist. G-Shock watches are made to be worn loose (yes, if you’re doing the strap up tightly, you shouldn’t be) and the GG-B100 is quite top-heavy and often tried to slip over the top of my wrist. The strap is very stiff at first which doesn’t help, but should mold to your wrist over time.
I sincerely prefer the mineral glass over the sapphire crystal because of the way it behaves over time but that’s more of a personal opinion. The stainless steel resin case is of incredibly good quality and trust me it can be reliable for lots of years from the moment you buy it. The band material is a good-feeling resin that Casio pretty much used in all G-Shock with some exception, so nothing new here. As the previous model, the G-Steel also features a „hands out of the way” function which will put the hands in a position that will let you see all of the background indicators.
