To compensate for this, Roombas have a rotating multi-pronged brush on one side which sweeps debris towards the path of the cleaning head, helping to clean a wider path and to reach into edges and corners. All Roomba models can be operated by manually carrying them to the room to be cleaned and pressing a button. Later models introduced several additional operating modes, such as “Spot” which cleans an area of a few feet and “Max” which cleans endlessly until the battery is depleted. “Dock” mode, introduced with the third generation, instructs the Roomba to seek a charging base for recharging. Many second- and third-generation Roombas come packaged with infrared remote controls, allowing a human operator to “drive” the Roomba to areas to be specially cleaned. First- and second-generation Roombas are compatible with the Virtual Wall, an accessory used to prevent them from entering an area.
Infrared “cliff sensors” on the bottom of Roombas similarly prevent them from falling off ledges such as stairways. These slow down the Roomba when nearing obstacles, to reduce its force of impact. It’s also used to clean dyson robot vacuum alongside walls without bumping into the wall repeatedly. This technology is also able to distinguish between hard and soft obstacles. However, this vacuum doesn’t have a HEPA filter to help trap allergens as it cleans.
Since we test all the robot vacuums in the same home environment, we check how full the dustbins get and whether the robot picks up obvious debris like pet hair and dust bunnies. Battery life is also an important factor to consider based on the size of your home. In general, most robot vacuums can run for at least 60 to 70 minutes, which should be enough to tackle smaller homes and apartments.
In addition to using each robot vacuum daily for at least several weeks, I tested each for its suction on various types of flooring, including corners, ability to maneuver around obstacles, noise, and special features. You just fill the tank with water and some cleaning formula and attach it to the vacuum in place of the dustbin. The mop pads spin to scrub away stuck-on debris while avoiding carpeting. In our carpet tests, the i3+ EVO picked up all of the coffee grounds, kitty litter, and pet hairs we laid out and left behind only about 5% of the flour — the best performance of all the robot vacs we tested.
Beyond quickly testing to make sure it worked, I didn’t use the controller because the vacuum pairs with your phone and is compatible with Alexa and Google Assistant. Unfortunately, the app doesn’t allow you to set up no-go zones or virtual barriers. The Bissell SpinWave Robot Vacuum picked up all the pet hair on carpet in our tests and has a great assortment of mop attachments and accessories. The reasonably priced M7 Pro comes with a physical remote and offers an impressive set of smart features, including scheduling, area cleaning, virtual boundaries, and Alexa voice control. IRobot is one of the most respected names in the robot vacuum market, and the Roomba i3+ EVO is its most affordable model with a self-emptying dustbin. Beyond offering greater convenience than their more manual counterparts, self-emptying robot vacuums significantly limit your exposure to dust, a big plus if you suffer from allergies. It also features a self-emptying dustbin, good battery life, impressive obstacle avoidance, and strong vacuum suction power.
