Huffy Bicycles Corporate Office

You don’t see too many folks cutting any lock to get at most Huffy bikes. Huffy also made some dependable three speed bikes one of which is ridden by staunch Huffy defender Tony Cherolis of the Bike Project. There have been some more recent bikes of the late 1960’s to 1980’s that are also of world class quality.

The internet is full of stories of Huffy bikes that have served their owners well before being passed on to others, while some bike snobs trash them without mercy. A brand of cheapo bikes sold in department stores such as Walmart. They usually are supposed to look like mountain bikes, but are not strong or light enough to actually tolerate such use, and are rarely ridden off street. Today, Huffy bikes are designed in Dayton Ohio, where their product development and marketing divisions also operate, while their manufacturing still takes place outside of the U.S.

The High Rise had a long banana seat with supporting struts and tall “ape-hanger” handlebars. Huffy hesitated for several months before agreeing to make the bike, on the condition that if the bike failed to sell that Mole would buy all the leftover parts and frames. The new bike, informally designated the Penguin, began appearing in retail stores by March 1963.

The former U.S. bicycle factory in Celina, Ohio, is today used by Crown Equipment Corporation to produce forklifts. Most of their mountain bikes are hardtails, meaning they don’t come with rear suspension, only a front suspension fork. Hardtail mountain bikes are generally more affordable than full-suspension varieties, plus they’re easier to maintain. They also keep the weight of the bike low, making it easier to maneuver, which is ideal for those just starting out in mountain biking. Huffy mountain bikes usually have disc brakes that allow a short stopping time so you can stop powerfully and efficiently. Most of their mountain bikes also have wide, knobbly tires that measure 24 x 2.4 inches and have excellent traction.

“The severe retail price decline and margin erosion confronting the bicycle company have negatively impacted our results,” the company said in announcing the decision. “The changes in the bicycle operation will significantly enhance its ability to compete in the fiercely competitive bicycle market.” Huffy said the pre-tax cost and other charges associated with the plant closings are estimated at $42.4 million, or $2.64 per share. The company said its earnings will also be hurt by having to sell its inventory of more expensive, U.S.-produced bikes and winding down domestic production. About 100 employees in the bicycle division will remain at Huffy headquarters in the Dayton suburb of Miamisburg to work on design, marketing and distribution.

The skewer, which connects the Coho XC Cargo Trailer to the bicycle, can shear or bend. This can cause instability of the trailer and the towing bicycle and pose a fall hazard for the bicycle rider. Seven years later in 1960, Huffman was the third largest bike manufacturer in the United States.

Excel Group Inc. was a leader in the shift, moving production to Brazil, Taiwan and China. U.S. bikemaking jobs began moving across the Pacific Ocean more than a decade ago as economics and demographics forced the industry to rethink strategy. mongoose bmx bike itself shuttered its largest production plant, in Celina, Ohio, last year. The union had tried unsuccessfully in recent years to organize the two plants being shuttered. For example, a Schwinn subsidiary produces mountain and BMX bikes in Santa Ana, Calif., and makes frames at various U.S. locations. Leibowitz said Huffy’s move is a strong indication that the less expensive bicycles are being made overseas, leaving U.S. production to focus on more expensive bikes.

In 1998, schwinn bicycles Corporation produced the high quality M600 Mountain Bike for Raleigh, the frame manufactured here in the USA. It was a last gasp effort at solvency before collapsing under pressure from Wal-Mart. Hundreds of American jobs paying a living wage were swapped for poverty class wages in China. Huffy was under pressure from Walmart in particular, who at one point ordered 900,000 bikes, but insisted that Huffy decrease its prices significantly.

There are also several Raleigh-made three-speeds and Carlton road bikes that were imported by Huffy which are very nice. Huffy, for much of the 1930’s to 1960’s, manufactured bicycles that were equivalent to — if not as fancy as — Schwinn, and they have found a niche among collectors. The older Huffy bikes were quite nice for their era and can be a great pick-up, if you can find them at a garage sale or craigslist. If someone unilaterally says that all Huffys are junk, there are several examples of quality or dependable bicycles you can refer them to. “Yeah I guess I had a good time on my date the other night, the girl was nice but she gave me a total huffy.”
