A leading product from DJI, the DJI Inspire line became iconic for its aggressive design and motorized landing gear. The Inspire 2 may be getting a little older, but it still offers some of the best flight features, reliability and one of the best cameras around for a drone under $10,000. DJI proved the Inspire 2 was viable for consumers and professionals alike, and the drone dji fly continues to offer value to pilots. The short version of the story is that DJI launched the Phantom 1 back in January of 2013. Ten minutes of flight time with a mount for an action-type camera and the world was hooked. By my count, the Phantom 4 Pro and Pro+– as announced November of 2016, with major release to market in January 2017 – is the 11th iteration to the line.
It’s loaded with features, including obstacle avoidance, and is a fine choice for enthusiast pilots. DJI’s pilot software allows switching between visible or IR images, or viewing them side-by-side, and the 16x zoom is ideal for looking closely at areas identified by the thermal camera. The high price is in part explained by the 30fps thermal camera – very useful on a drone – when so many have a lower frame rate, but the device can be adapted further with accessories like phantom 4 spotlights, a loudspeaker and a RTK module. The Tello EDU is the same aircraft – with a cool partially transparent shell – but sold with a more sophisticated SDK that offers the chance to do more with the 14-core processor, chief among which is swarm flying. Swift Playgrounds allows control of up to four aircraft at once – be your own wing commander! You’ll also find, in the box, mission pads which the drones can fly over & respond to via the optical flow sensor.
DJI releases the DJI Matrice 30 drone and drone in a box solution. The M30 has multi-camera capabilities while the DJI Dock enables autonomous drone deployment and charging. DJI also releases FlightHub 2 – a cloud-based flight planning and fleet management solution. Wang built the first prototypes of DJI’s projects in his dorm room, selling the flight control components to universities and Chinese electric companies. He used the proceeds to move to the industrial hub of Shenzhen and hired a small number of staff in 2006. The company struggled at first, with a high degree of churn among employees that has been attributed to Wang’s abrasive personality and perfectionist expectations of his employees. The company sold a modest amount of components during this period, relying as well on financial support from Wang’s family friend, Lu Di, who provided US$90,000 and managed the company’s finances.
