Polo Ralph Lauren Men’s V

Or even worse, when I see a man over 40 years old wearing ripped jeans. Kiss it goodbye as it does not make you look cool but rather makes you look silly. In the new system, the success of menswear will stem more from the ability to create needs rather than chasing flamboyant trends or even pre-existing styles. Ralph Lauren’s Polo created an American department store fragrance market for middle-class men to distinguish itself from the drug store banality and the overpriced “classic” French specialization houses.

Ralph Lauren has mastered balancing comfort and taste to celebrate the delight in being American by focusing on traditional and decorative design in the spirit of conquest. I’ll be the first to say it; there is not only nothing wrong for a man to dress like a man, but more importantly, it is the way you should be dressing. Let’s just say it works well in alignment with the rules of fit, polo dress shirts balance and proportion- not to mention the male anatomy. I put a little of the after shave balm on and wherever I went it left an odor trail. All and all, a lovely scent that will be around for decades, those that want a “modern” perfume, go to the corner CVS and get a cheap AXE. There is no age for a great fragrance, and Polo is one of those ageless perfumes that will become a classic.

Do you like warm spice, earthy tobacco, muddy roots, green and damp decaying woods in the late evening just a few degrees above freezing? Polo is one of the few that can truly handle the Paul Bunyan like giants of masculinity on earth without restraining that inner-beast inside. I started wearing this amazing scent in college in the early 80’s.

And yes, it’s still absolutely outstanding. A fragrance born the same year as me, ended up being my very first cologne that made me say hey, I need this in my life. I want to look like this, I want to smell like this, I want more plaid in my life, and I need a better haircut. Must have been 1989 or so I started stealing sprays from my older brother. Like dozens and dozens of men my age, this scent was what got me into men’s fragrance.

It still lasts well and seems more versatile now to me. Redolent of pine trees and stale cigarette butts. A sharp, bitter synthetic “green” fragrance that’s more dated than Burt Reynolds’ mustache. This is the most ubiquitous fragrances on older men in America, especially the South. Much like my elders, I respect it, but I’d rather spend my time and money on any other piece of my collection. This is one of the few fragrances that I can smell in public and undoubtedly know exactly what the man is wearing.

It is definitely a green leather chypre devoid of the awkward “celery note” of Yatagan and with a bit cleaner, more defined and spicier drydown than Aramis . I get mainly artemisia and pine, oakmoss and vetiver, tobacco, rugged old school leather accord , just the right amount of sweetness in the background. Of course, it still has that boozy classic men’s cologne smell that is far from clean by modern standards. At the same time, it has more depth than I would have imagined.

When it dries down it evolves into elegant leather that’s still infused with green. Some one said that it smells like death. I completely agree because it is plain herbal smell with no unpleasant or pleasant effect. This neutrality gives it a status of ‘only for men’. My perfume journey started with this perfume around 25 years ago.
