These designer sunglasses are made from glossy black acetate with a delectable gleam. You could be wearing these in fifty years time and they’d still be considered the apex of style. These might not wear as easily as a lot of the styles Ray-Ban sells but they definitely have some sporty throwback appeal. If you’re really into 1960s-style wraparound shades, the ultra-lightweight nylon frames and classic G-15 lenses don’t leave much to be desired.

Most frames are made of nylon and propionate, a common plastic used in glasses thanks to the fact that it’s lightweight and durable and has hypoallergenic qualities. A number of Ray-Ban frames are made of acetate, which is pricier but offers a glossy look while being strong and scratch-resistant. Other materials include metal, titanium, carbon fiber, and even frames in premium materials like leather, wood, aluminum, and gold. The 1950s revival that fueled the glasses’ popularity in the 1980s lost momentum, and Wayfarers were outcompeted by wraparound frames. During the slump of the 1990s, Ray-Ban’s parent company, Bausch & Lomb was facing pressure from competitors like Oakley.
Born out of necessity in 1937, Ray-Ban has been at the leading edge of developing high quality sunglasses to protect pilots from the sun’s harsh rays. Since then, Ray-Ban has been the eyewear of choice for visionaries and cultural creators everywhere to express their fearless and most authentic selves. During the 2000s Wayfarer revival, many sunglasses designs inspired by the original Wayfarers were produced by designers unaffiliated with Ray-Ban. Grey Ant’s Grant Krajecki designed a larger, cartoonish version of the glasses “so extreme that are best worn by those with a good sense of humor”. Other Wayfarer-inspired sunglasses included Oliver Peoples’ Hollis, REM Eyewear’s Converse, and various designs in Juicy Couture, Hugo Boss, Kate Spade, Marc Jacobs’s and Kaenon Polarized 2008 lines. Between July and September 2008, retailers began selling frameless Wayfarers.
Frames like these Sixties-inspired 4371s show that Ray-Ban can still produce a stylish new design. The glasses are a nice blend of old and new-school with a laidback round design a keyhole bridge and slim arms. They look best with round or triangular face types and are especially flattering on smaller faces.
