When you first start your Mavic Mini, the default flying mode is called “flight training,” which limits your altitude to 30m and flight distance to 50m. To get that, you’ll need to pass the Part 107 Aeronuatical Knowledge Test for UAS operators, a mandatory test for anyone looking to fly drones commercially. This drone, as many recent ones can not take off in many areas where you might want to take pictures, and if it can’t fly it is as good as a brick. They can have my money as soon as they release a version with a 1″ sensor and a slower lens . I had a Spark and it flew away and I swore I would never own a drone again. But, there are just some shots that are way too cool shot with a drone…especially for adventure travel photography. I think this Mini hits all the marks for the occasional shot.
It costs less if you shop around, and thanks to the fact it sports virtually identical camera hardware, footage is comparable, even if its resolution caps out at 2.7K. Right now, the 2 doesn’t need to be registered in most countries due to its weight, but that’s not the only benefit of its size. Its incredibly intuitive control system means you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better quality drone to get your hovering off the ground.
The Mini 2 doesn’t include any internal storage of its own, so don’t forget to buy a memory card—I recommend a 16GB card at minimum for 1080p, and 32GB or 64GB if you plan on recording video at 4K. When folded, the drone can slide into a jacket pocket, but you’ll probably still want to carry it in a small bag. The included remote control is a bit bigger this time around, but with more advanced wireless communication tech and stronger antennas. Where the first-generation aircraft struggled to keep a solid connection at longer distances, the Mini 2 is absolutely rock solid. It’s hard to believe that Panasonic’s video-centric GH series is 13 years old.
In Germany, it is in fact almost impossible to fly a drone legally anywhere! There are so many restrictions, even if it is sub 250 grams . The option of digital zoom, provided on the Mini 2, shouldn’t really be a deciding factor. It’s odd that it wasn’t an option on the earlier Mini, since it is only a digital zoom which will be of limited use to optical purists, but it feels better to have than not to. If you’re dji fly planning on undertaking roof surveys, for example, the Mini 2’s option of digital zoom might well be a worthwhile distinction as you can get in tight on any suspicious areas. Under the video heading, the Mini 2 has a very distinct advantage if 4K is of use to you.
Whether you opt for the Mavic Mini or the Mini 2 will come down to how much you want that 4K resolution. But whichever you opt for, you won’t be disappointed, as long as you’re happy to shoot during the brighter daylight hours.
