Why Facebook Is Using Ray

Many times, even though I was staring right at an object — a flower, a slice of pizza — I either couldn’t capture the whole thing, couldn’t center the image, or couldn’t get the close-up I wanted. Ray-Ban Stories are surprisingly good for listening to music or making phone calls. The audio sounded crisp and dynamic during a nature walk, while not obscuring the sounds of birds and squirrels. I was a bit self-conscious while listening to tunes, though, since I could tell that anyone within a few feet could hear bits of the music. I also had trouble using the touchpad, which often interpreted my attempts to turn the volume up as pausing the music, or turned it down rather than up.

They charge when you set them in the carrying case, which Facebook says gives three full charges. As someone who doesn’t normally wear glasses, the clear lens Ray-Ban Stories felt a bit awkward for me during everyday moments, like walking through San Francisco to a coffee meeting or wearing them at dinner with friends.

The arms on the Ray-Ban Stories glasses are slightly wider than a normal pair, but they don’t look geeky. (They also don’t have a waveguide, or a microprojector for display optics, since they’re not powering AR overlays). Packed into the arms are a power button, a capture button, a three-microphone array, two tiny speakers, and a touch panel.

Many other versions will follow, and we’ll need to look out not just for Ray-Bans, but for all types of devices recording us in more subtle ways. As Zuckerberg mentioned in a video introducing Ray-Ban Stories, he plans to ultimately replace mobile phones with Facebook smart glasses. Getting regular eye exams, eating a healthful diet, taking breaks from staring at digital devices, and protecting your eyes in the sun can all help in keeping your vision healthy. EssilorLuxottica shares this vision for wearables that will transform the way we connect and interact with other people and the world around us. The launch of the first-generation Ray-Ban Stories smart glasses is an exciting glimpse at what’s possible when we begin to shift to devices that enhance day-to-day life, rather than distract from it. As with any new device, we have a big responsibility to help people feel comfortable and provide peace of mind, and that goes not only for device owners but the people around them, too. That’s why we baked privacy directly into the product design and functionality of the full experience, from the start. Three iconic Ray-Ban frames merge with Facebook technology to create the latest in wearable tech.

However, speakers on both sides of the frame can play sound from your phone over Bluetooth, allowing you to take a call or listen to a podcast without pulling your phone out. A touchpad built into the side of the frame lets you change the volume or play and pause what you’re hearing. The Ray-Ban Stories in the iconic Wayfarer style — those chunky ’50s-era frames that still look fashionable today — weigh just five grams more than the standard version.

No brand of sunglasses is as easily recognizable and iconic as the classic Ray Ban. If you own a pair of Ray Bans, you own a piece of nostalgic history. The brand was created in the 1920s as an answer to pilots’ complaints about frequent headaches caused by sun glare and overpowering hues in the sky. This style is still sold today and has become one of the most popular trends in sunglasses of all time.
